[Cons]/Overcrowding

Alright, while I understand that many people can't afford to go to all the cons they'd like to, there is a point of getting insane about things. While I'm not talking about the people who will put 5 or maybe 6 in a room that has two beds, I'm more talking about the ones who will put 8-20+. Yes, it happens and it happens a lot. Why? To supposedly be nice and make it easy for people to get to a con who couldn't otherwise. You know what? Tough shit, not only is it nasty as hell in rooms like this but your stuff is likely to get stolen, damaged or gods knows what...

Yes, this is in direct response to a situation that occurred just recently at Youmacon up in Detroit. Apparently, someone decided to book a whole floor and was charging $50 per spot, 10 spots per room. That's profiteering at it's finest and they were nuts to try it. Because of this, the hotel went into lock down mode and only allowed 4-5 people per room. Which was stated on every single single room (aside from suites) that was rented for the weekend. Sure, they kind of botched the whole thing with wrist bands and other such methods of trying to control room access, but it was knee jerk reaction to a much larger problem that goes on at large cons everywhere.

Many out there are thinking it'll be so awesome to have 10 or 20 (I've even heard of 30) in a room at once, think again. These rooms are maybe 500sqft or so. Try sleeping, changing, showering, getting in and out of cosplay in a room that has only ONE bathroom. Not to mention where do you sleep? Like having feet in your face? Like sleeping on top of other people or on top of bags? How about sleeping in the bathtub or bathroom and then someone having to go to the bathroom while you're in there? Don't even start on the stench of unwashed bodies that will be in there for days. Also, these tend to be hotbeds of things being stolen as well and there's really no way to prove who did it or when it happened. Doesn't sound so good anymore, does it? Do yourself a favor and just avoid it. Spend the extra $40-$50 or whatever.

Also, don't forget that this is a major fire hazard and the hotel can and will kick you out. They don't even have to refund any money since the person who signed for the room has signed a legal contract and room occupancy is in that contract. Many cons are now shutting this kind of activity down on their forums and hotels will know about this. Trust me, these people talk to each other in the industry and it won't be a surprise if policies at hotels change for larger cons like Colossalcon, Ohayocon, etc. Either way, it doesn't matter. You complain about it when the con floor is overcrowded, imagine it's the place you're sleeping, changing, etc.

Look, I get a lot of people want to go to cons and have fun but if you can't afford to go and stay...don't. You won't have a good time anyway more than likely. Sure you'll say you did, but you'll probably end up looking back and going "Damn...that was crazy" and try to rationalize it. Don't do that. You're only fooling yourself.
