[Anime]/Teekyu - Blink and You'll Miss It

Okay, this series is completely insane. I'll just flat out say it. If you're not brushed up on your Japanese and if you blink...just watch everything over and over until it all sinks in. Every joke and scene happens so quick that it makes warp drive look like old folks in the slow lane. The speed of things really is completely insane, but given that every episode is only 2min long can you really be surprised at the frantic pace of things? Should also say that it really made doing a review fairly easy. How many times do you run across a series that's only as long as a normal episode?!

  • Genre: Comedy/Slice of Life
  • Length: 12ep
  • Rating: 7/10
  • Recommendation:You have to see it to believe it. This is SoL comedy without anything regarding regular life at all...they left normal in another country and didn't give it directions home. You'll end up watching all 12 episodes before you know what happened.

Teekyu started life as a manga series in February 2012, the anime came out just 7 months later in October. That's blisteringly fast, in case you were wondering. However, this point shows in the animation quite a bit. There's a lot of things that are off and they may have been trying to cover up these flaws by promoting the fact that it's the fastest anime adaptation of a manga series so much.

That said, the show is about a tennis club...but not so much about tennis at all, even though there are a couple of bits that revolve around it and there are jokes about tennis. Yeah, if that didn't make sense to you, don't feel bad. Out of the four members, Yuri is the only the one that actually knows how to play tennis at all. Kanae, Nasuno and Marimo have no clue at all despite being all year two students. Again, that's perfectly fine as they don't spend much time doing anything tennis related anyways. Each of them does have their endearing qualities though and really you will most likely end up liking them all and the insanity of the whole thing.

The jokes are on target and some of the stuff is genuinely funny, but you don't really get any time at all to laugh because if you do...you'll miss the next bit completely. That or you could end up just being stunned by a few things that show up completely out of nowhere. It really is like they've taken the idea of shows such as Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh and just stripped it down to the bare bones insanity of them and then hit fast forward.

Overall, I'd say check it out and I think that most will be able to overlook the shortcuts they made in the animation process in order to crank out a show that only lasts two minutes. For those that are curious and just can't let something this strange pass by, it's up on Crunchyroll. Just keep an eye out for lowland gorilla's when you do.
