[Anime]/Yuyushiki - First...Impression?

Well, at the suggestion from a few folks on Google+, I finally got around watching the first couple of episodes of this adaptation of Komata Mikami 4-panel manga. It was under the understanding that since I'm a fan of Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh and we enjoyed YuruYuri that we'd like this one too. They couldn't have been more right...

With that in mind, I had actually watch two episodes to get a good first look at this one. Why? Well, it's so random that it just begged to be investigated more deeply. I mean after one episode I was left with the "Wow...that, was special" and I just had to see if it continued on like that. It definitely did. Sure, it's not as completely random or batshit crazy as maybe Azumanga or My Ordinary Life so far, but it's definitely up there.

The show follows three unlikely students who seem to have become part of the Data Processing Club, which has zero members. So by default, they're it. What of these three? Well, you have the somewhat uptight and more serious Yui, who feels silly even in just the school's uniform, and outside of that? Well...these next two, the extremely special pair that is Yuzuko and Yukari (what's all the Y names?) who seem hell bent on causing her as much annoyance as humanly possible in their quest to figure out (or explain randomly) whatever comes into their demented little heads.

I did find it odd these three get along at all, let alone occupy spaces together. However, there have been a few scenes already that show they're all just a wee bit out there in the same ways,Yui just seems to hold it together better in situations that call for it. I should also mention that Yuzuko and Yukari are a bit more perverted than what some may be used to in this kind of show, though it's not overly surprising either, and there's a lot of jokes that circle around that. That said, the end result is typically pretty damn funny and they haven't really crossed any lines that would be pushing things too far.

Either way, the show seems to be a good adaptation and the randomness that you expect from a SoL/Comedy 4-panel is definitely there. The voice acting isn't bad and the animation is what you'd expect as well, so no real surprises there. Overall, this one is going into the weekly rotation once I've caught up on the rest of the episodes from this season.

You can catch it on Crunchyroll with new episodes out every Tuesday at 4pm EDT for premium members.
