[Anime] Appleseed Alpha set for Summer Release

It was announced yesterday that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Lucent Pictures had teamed up to produce another entry into the Appleseed film franchise. This new CG animation project, titled Appleseed Alpha, is set to release this summer and will be directed by Shinji Aramaki once more.

The interesting thing is that this is a sort of prequel of sorts, even though they're calling it a "reboot". The story is reported to focus on the early days of Deunan and Briareos and their search for the legendary city of Olympus.

I've always been curious as to just went on during the time before Deunan was brought to the city of Olympus and this seems to be wanting to answer those questions a bit more than the other films. The only confusing thing is that they're calling it a reboot. Will this be completely retconning all of the events from the 2004 Appleseed movie and it's 2007 sequel, Ex Machina? I'm not sure, it could just be a true prequel and there was a bit of mistranslation somewhere along the road.

Overall, I'm just happy to see another film entry into the series. While I still love the original 1988 OVA film, I've really enjoyed the newer entries as well, you know since they're a bit more in line with the actual manga series from Masamune Shirow and all that.

Production has been going on for a while and by the looks of the first released still from the movie, posted up by IGN, they've definitely uppped their game a bit! How they've kept this one quiet for so long is a bit baffling, but the work they've been doing in the dark recesses of whatever basement they've locked the production team away in is amazing.

It'll be interesting to see just how this one develops and I'll definitely be keeping my eye out on future developments as it gets closer to release.
