[Howl-O-Scream]/Mazes and ScareZones Galore at BGT!

Well, we didn't have to wait long for the folks at Busch Gardens Tampa to give us the rest of their houses, now did we? Fresh off the the Howl-O-Scream website we can now give you in on all of the haunts and scare zones that will be inhabiting the park for this year's event!

Now, we've already covered a few of the mazes before with their respective icon from "The 13"; Death Water Bayou, The Basement, Circus of Superstition 3-D and Zombie Mortuary and the first scare zone, Pain Lane. Additionally The 13 get their very own scarezone as well!

So, while I'll touch on those check the past articles about them and their residents for a lot more information about to what expect from this year's line up of 8 mazes and 3 scare zones!

One thing I have noticed is, like Williamsburg, a lot of these mazes  have been around a while, most since 2011. The new editions being Death Water Bayou, The Basement and another twisted update to Vampire Casino. Can't say I blame them for bringing a lot of these back, but it's definitely nice to see a few new haunts entering in the mix as well!

Before we get to all that thought, here's a look at the newest commercial for this year's event:

So, with that out out of the way, here's the rest of the year's line up!

As lightning rages and thunder crashes outside, “The Creature” escapes from his holding cell in a high-security asylum for the criminally insane.

Now this sadistic deviant is running rampant, skinning his former cellmates and turning the mental hospital into his own torture chamber.

This serial killer’s bloody playground will drive you out of your mind with fear.

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and say this is probably where we're gonna run into #7: The Surgeon and #11: The Psychopath. Just seems like a fitting environment for those two balls of fun to hang out in, eh? This one's coming back for it's 3rd season and I'm willing to bet it's going to be more intense than in previous years...

Beating hearts, swinging pendulums and a raven’s cries haunt the manor of Lenore, creating a demented and twisted nightmare. Step inside to experience the gothic terror that maddens the lord of the house and feel delusion overcome reality.

Find your way out of this horror story before paranoia authors your final chapter.

Who doesn't love Edgar Allen Poe? Can't say that it's not fitting either...That said, I can't figure out for the life of me which of The 13 will be inhabiting this one at all. Maybe none of them? That would be weird...but hey, not every one of them needs their own house, right? Yet another from the 2011 crop of mazes, but there's nothing wrong with that...sometimes age is the best way to perfect things.

Under sleek Vampire reign, the once-vibrant Ultimate Gamble casino glowed. Now werewolves have overthrown their mortal enemies and are running rampant in the casino.

The carnivorous beasts have caught on to the scent of fresh blood inside the closed casino.

Will you make it out alive before your luck runs out?

Ah, vampires. What would we do without them? This time it seems they've decided to have a little fun, but as always there's the jealous party. Damn werewolves spoiling everyone's fun! Have to say, I like the twist going on here. Then again, who doesn't love a good werewolf/vampire fight? This is the 3rd incarnation of the Vampire Casino since 2011 and every year they tweak it just a little to keep it fresh.

Deep in the bayou the #6 Voodoo Queen mystically transforms lost wanderers into her minions of evil with black magic. Here, her night servants roam with a zombie-like hunger and seek to grow her collection.

The darkest evils lurk in shadows.

Get out before you fall victim to her spell.

The Voodoo Queen was the first of The 13 announced for this year's event and I went into quite a bit of detail about that in an earlier article. That said, I still love mazes in this style, there's just something about them just screams "yep, this is what it's all about" for some reason. I haven't figured it out but this brand new maze for 2013 is one I'm very much looking forward to!

From Momma’s secret ingredient to Granny’s bone-ground flour, Momma’s Meats’ award-winning recipe has always been a family affair that’s only created in the BASEMENT.

Escape the depths of the BASEMENT before she and #4 Butcher turn you in to the secret sauce!

She always said it took blood, sweat and tears!

Ah yes, home to everyone's favorite culinary expert...I think. It's hard to say if he's much of an expert of anything, but as we covered before, The Butcher is an extra special case of psychotic goodness. This little bundle of joy should prove to be just the thing to stem off your hunger...or someone else's for that matter. Another brand new maze for this year and it certainly looks to be promising. For more info head to the previous article about both!

You’ve tried to avoid black cats and sidewalk cracks, but all those years of bad luck caught up with you!

The #13 Clown challenges you to survive 13 superstitions in their 3-D Tent of Terror, but it will take more than luck to escape his whole new dimension of fear.

Another returning maze, this one debuted back in 2011. To me this sounds a lot like the 13: Your Numbers Up house at Busch Gardens Williamsburg but with a very different twist. That said, I've come to realize that it's completely unreasonable for me to expect any haunt to go without clowns, 3-D or a mixture of the two...it's a like a plague or as +Carrie H.C. put it on her recent HOS article "Halloween syphilis". I kind of agree, but at least they've gone with an "actual" clown...and not some hyper cartoonized one for the headliner here. We'll see how it translates into the rest of the maze well.

For more info about The Clown and all that fun jazz, check out our previous article all about 'em

No one remembers how the epidemic started, but now, the #9 Zombie and his undead friends live here. They infest this small town funeral home and feed on the fresh flesh and brains of mortuary mourners to satisfy their insatiable hunger.

Avoid the walking dead or you may find yourself deeper than six feet under.

Ah yes, the zombies are coming. Why not? Everyone loves a good zombie and no matter how many times you think you're safe from them...they just keep coming back. Interestingly enough, this maze is another from the 2011 stable to make it's appearance for a 3rd season and with the new blood of #9: The Zombie fueling this one, it's going to be a fun ride more than likely. Read on for more info about The Zombie and the maze announcement here.

And there we have it, the maze line up for this year's Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Tampa. Oh, wait, there's supposed to be 8 of them aren't there? Almost forgot...the 8th house is an all new "upcharge" event entitled "The Experiment". I've already done a pretty lengthy article on that one so I'll keep this one short...

Researchers challenge your fear tolerance and mental endurance in this never-been-done-before Experiment. In this exclusive study, “test subjects” endure psychological tests and must face top fear-inducing elements, from roaches and snakes to needles and darkness.

How far is too far in this study of fear?

Will you survive The Experiment?

I'm still very much up in the air about this one. It costs anywhere from $50-$80 (1-4 people in a group) and is replacing last year's "Alone House" which was only $25 (online) and $35 in the park for up to four people. Again, I'm still very mixed on this event...guess only time will tell.

So, with that out of the way, let's get onto the scare zones shall we? This year, as like most years, there are all new deviously twisted areas for you to wander through. First up? The flagship scare zone for this year's theme of The 13...

Once every century, on precisely the thirteenth year, evil comes out to play.

Thirteen evils, to be exact. The #7 Surgeon, #4 Butcher, #11 Psychopath, #13 Clown, #6 Voodoo Queen and their demented friends will torment and terrorize you the moment you enter the gates.

This is your chance to find out: Who are the 13?

Well, I'm glad that they're giving their icons some star billing here with this one. However, there's quite a few left out and I'm not sure why a few of these are featured in the description yet have their own houses while there's still so many that are "homeless" as it were. There must be a good reason for it, or they're going to let the others just go all willy nilly and terrorize people all over the park. I rather like that idea. You listening Howl-O-Scream staff? If you are...that would be awesome to see!

For more info on The 13 and to see videos, and much more about them all, click here for all the announcements!

Torture, torment and pain line this sinister street as the #2 Torturer and #12 Hangman stalk their prey in the shadows of this dark and sinister alley.

Here, pain-inducing devices are the toys of the twisted and screams are surrounded by haunting silence. Will you escape this playground of pain before the #2 Torturer and #12 Hangman find you?

Well, okay...they're not all homeless and it seems that they've kinda stuck with the idea here. I already kinda mentioned this one before when the ever so fun, Torturer was announced but I think it's a great thing to have both these icons in this section. Maybe an appearance by The Hunter as well? Could be...who knows...

An unnerving soundtrack of banjos, fiddles and harmonicas fill the fields with haunting bluegrass music. Something just doesn’t feel right. You realize you’re not alone when you discover a hoard of sadistic scarecrows.

They’re looking to harvest a few lost souls.

Will you escape their reach or be theirs forever?

Oh look, scarecrows and hicks of death! Didn't really see that coming from this year's event but I guess it fits in with the insane hodgepodge of terror that they have going. This is another long time type of theme for haunts across the country and I admit, I'm curious to see if the HOS team is going to put a new spin on it...I'm guessing they have something interesting up their sleeves, so we'll just have to find out when we make our visit.

Overall this looks like a very solid show for the park this year and they've kept enough of the old, familiar themes along with a healthy sprinkling of new stuff to make this one event that I'm very curious about checking out first hand.

So, there ya have it. Everything that you can expect (that we know of so far) from this year's Howl-O-Scream event at Busch Gardens Tampa! +Carrie H.C. (of InSanity lurks Inside) and myself will be down to experience the event this year so stay tuned for our reviews and any other information that comes out between now and then!
